I was pleasantly pleased to see that Specsavers have opened a new branch at La Zenia. Good to see an established company investing in the area.

Press Release:

Specsavers Ópticas opens new store in La Zenia on 14th of January
The opticians will be officially opened by Councillor for Commerce Miguel

Ángel Fernández

Optical chain Specsavers is opening a new store in La Zenia in Orihuela Costa. The opening event will take place on the 14 th of January from 10am. At 11.30am, Councillor for Commerce Miguel Ángel Fernández Cánovas will officially open the store alongside the Directors and staff members. Residents are invited to join the event.

As part of the opening event, there will be plenty of food, drinks, giveaways, balloons and music from 10am. Big FM radio will be broadcasting live from the party from 12-3pm, creating a wonderful atmosphere.

Specsavers generally do not often offer the same standard as aftercare service as the smaller independents.

This is because primarily they are a sales based operation, an American conglomerate - franchise type business.

I own a share in UK Opticians in a main high street in UK. Specsavers business plan (or part of in the UK) is to open nearby established independents, in the hope that with the marketing spend a big conglomerate brings, they put the smaller local shops out of business. That is how they work. Seek and destroy.

In year one, we saw the independent took a hit, as people know of Specsavers - they have the brand name & wanted to see NEW. However, after year one, people go back, small problems - customer service & smaller requests and reportedly get poor after sales service, now the main profitability has gone. This is when we saw the independents business go back up again as people want service and in an ongoing manner. There is a reason why the independent has been there for years - people come back for genuine customer service.

Of course, this is no reflection on the skills of the specific Optician or staff within Specsavers, who may well be good - But as a company the standard glasses they peddle and the joke that is 2 for 1 - you'll end up paying more than you anticipate. 2 for 1 is an illusion, of course, when the first item is loaded, watch the extras add up.

Of course, I am biased, as I support small-medium local businesses and do not like the tricks the big players pull & the operational memorandum of Specsavers to try to open up in locations with the intent of putting smaller businesses out of business.
