A few tips which helped me out.
1) If you have a computer get someone to install you a copy of Rosetta Stone, spend a hour a day a few days a week off your own back, you will be suprised how that helps.
2) I learnt most of what I know listening to music, imagine you hear a song a whole bunch of times, you remember the words subconsciously, the principle is the same in Spanish, you just need to know what the words mean. A website like quedaletras or musica.com will have most of the top artists lyrics.
Once you have the words you will need a translator like google or to convert the words into English..
3) Socialising..... Way too many people avoid socialising because of the language barrier, make a point of going to Spanish Bars, Restaurants, Cafes, and wherever else possible, it helps if you dont mind having a few drinks to ease the nerves and boost the confidence a bit, you will be suprised how quickly things come.

Having a personal tutor to practice with also helps but group lessons in my opinion are a waste of time, everyone is normally at different levels and there are always a few clever clogs that dont give the new learners a chance...

I struggled too and gave up eventually. However I did find it very helpful if the very few Spanish people I knew spoke to me in Spanish occasionally. That at least gave me some confidence in my ability to understand the language even if I struggled desperately to speak it. Now back in England I've forgotten just about everything.
