In line with the not officially recognised theory of 'devolution' - as a species we are getting dumber, horrible but true on an average basis. We are basically turning ourselves back into monkeys ;-)

https://www.thesun.co.uk/tech/4046838/t ... ch-claims/

Whilst this article is 'so so' it mirrors other research, which basically states the poorer and less educated you are, the more children on average you have & so the cycle continues, right up to the point that nearly half of Americas population (*+Russia) voted for what appeared to be an utter imbecile / lying sexual predator, for president. Where does it go from here?

Yea, saw that one a while back.

It is worrying though as is a real problem, a not so gradual slide into stupidity. Let's face it we have crossed the dividing line, where if you add all the dumb people + the rich power brokers that tell the dumb WHAT THEY WANT TO HEAR (except it is rarely true) - then you can pretty much do and say anything if you are rich/celeb or both - which is exactly where we are today.

America the greatest nation on earth? Only in their minds, a cancer of a country - brought up on freedom and justice and now those are soundbites with little or no truth. Freedom to have a gun, that's about it. Useful as people get dumber & drug usage goes up, which in turn leads to more mental health issues + guns easier to find / use. Grrreat.

So who thought is was a fantastic idea to now allow concealed arms to be carried between states & lets not stop those with mental health issues getting guns either, as clearly they are no risk!!! Few more innocent deaths helped along by Trump.

I believe there is a fundamental problem with education. Schools no longer teach anything rather they show pupils where to find information. Where this becomes a problem is when the pupils access the information and have no way of knowing whether it is true or flawed. Take spelling for instance: no-one would think of trying to guess the spelling of Spanish words and yet this often occurs in English where someone tries to use a word they have heard and either doesn't know how to spell it and so guesses (this might work with a phonetic based language such as Spanish but certainly not in English) or can't be bothered to check and so they write what they think it sounds like. I believe it started with journalism and when newspapers came under pressure from the Internet they decide to set out to increase flagging numbers by publishing more and more untrue and lurid headlines and stories. If they received enough complaints then they print a retraction some days later and hidden in the depths of the paper. I have an acquaintance who is a journalist and works for a redtop (the one that should come with the hole in the corner ready for the nail) and happily states that he writes what the Editor wants written whether it is true or not. The alarming situation is that he sees nothing immoral in doing so. Finally whilst I am on my hobby horse does no-one realise that if they use a spell checker (un unusal event to be fair) that it is American and therefore gives American spellings????? Rant over!

Couldn't agree more about the newspapers. In fact, The Mail and the Express titles were singled out by the Leveson Enquiry for their misleading and inaccurate reporting, and Paul Dacre (Editor in Chief of the Mail stable) has never forgiven Cameron and the Conservatives for actually going through with the enquiry. He was humiliated when he appeared as a witness by the enquiry's counsel, and the final report was not at all flattering about his newspapers or his behaviour in the workplace.

By the way, it is possible to change the settings on most spell-checkers to correct for UK English rather than the USA's rather lazy way of spelling.

some people just cant spell like me ,and write how it sounds, its called dyslexia ,
I know off 2 people who are in the millionaire bracket that cant read or write correctly,
so it not a poor persons complaint.more so of a badly educated thing I would say,or the affected person not being able to absorb taught information,as I say to people I work with my hands not my head, its a good job we,re not all perfect,
and all these dole & benefits people, are they realy thick ?or are we the thickies for paying our taxes to keep them ,eh?
look at that begging ad that comes on tv, if you pay x amount a month, the uk government will pay x amount, and were do the uk government get there money from the uk tax payer US, so they want us to pay /donate twice or thrice,uk taxes forgein aid

You can set spell checker - set to UK English not American English ;-)

Of course a lot boils down to education. But, this won't help you that much if born to drug addict parents / imbeciles. Statistically, chances are you'll get off to a bad start, not a good family background combined with basically 'being none too intelligent' - bad start in life & difficult to break free from. Or is in today's society.

I'm a little leftfield example. Left school at 15, no qualifications, by 19 had been working over 3 years and set up my first business. By 24 I had a company exporting to 12 countries. Learnt on the job. If I didn't know how to do something, I found the best qualified person I could and ask them how to do it! That's still true today.

Whilst I had very little education at the time, I am fortunate - my family are not daft, history of self employment & some evidence of intelligence. My parents taught me morals - the rest I learnt outside of school.

I learnt basic maths in school and English - most other skills needed in daily life, i've learned for myself in the real world or had to do some qualifications since - my fault for leaving school at 15.

Problem is anyone can have children, the world is overpopulated - you can try to change the education system (needed), but need to address the social issues of women having children not in a family environment and people using religion/irresponsibility to have many kids which they can't support and then expect us all to. Of course those kids are poorly behaved as their parents are sitting on the sofa with the tin of beer watching football whilst on benefits, so issues are outside school as well. Figure out a way to stop the dumb & irresponsible having too many babies or look after the ones they have and we'll be on our way - except of course it won't happen, which is why we as a race ARE GETTING DUMBER.

I mean if I told you 20 years ago an orange faced crooked real estate developer / reality TV star, with 2500+ lawsuits against him and known woman groper, would be the president of the USA, you'd have sent me off to the funny farm. Somewhere between 1/3 - 1/2 of the American population, clearly do not have the intelligence to make any sort of rational decision, relying solely on 'IT MUST BE TRUE IT'S ON TV'. Within minutes of Trump opening his mouth (without a pre-rehearsed speech), it is quite obvious we are not dealing with someone intelligent, worse still, a spoilt, lying 71-year-old brat. He's paid off 100+ people with a non disclosure agreeement - so that's 100 times he's been guilty of something and bought silence. SIckening :(

Humanity is fucked - we are ok in small groups/pockets, but as a whole, the species does not work. Proven. Overall a horrible year for humanity, rather than work together, we split further. Now the Catalonia fiasco - did anyone mention they've been part of Spain since the 15th century and things today, well are a little different. Greed & selfishness.

Young adults should be educated about life skills/parenting much more - they should be put under pressure from a younger age which may dissuade them a little from having as many or kids too soon. (Why is it the UK has the highest teenage pregnancy rates?) - ahh yes emergency social benefits for mothers. Need to put different mechanisms in place.

In summary, the more I look around me, the more I see humanity fragmenting and frustratingly, beyond most of our control. Best we can do is look after those around us and set a good example - hopefully, some will follow.

"Now the Catalonia fiasco - did anyone mention they've been part of Spain since the 15th century" well yes and no but like everything it is a bit more complicated than that. Here is an article which very adequately explains the issue:

In 1150, the marriage of Petronilia, Queen of Aragon and Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona formed a dynasty leaving their son to inherit all territories concerning the region of Aragon and Catalonia.
This lasted until the reign of King Philip V. The War of the Spanish Succession ended with the defeat of Valencia in 1707, of Catalonia in 1714, and finally with the last of the islands in 1715 – resulting in the birth of modern-day Spain.
Subsequent kings tried to impose the Spanish language and laws on the region, but they abandoned their attempts in 1931 and restored the Generalitat (the national Catalan government).
General Francisco Franco, however, set out to destroy Catalan separatism and with his victory at the Battle of Ebro in 1938 he took control of the region, killing 3,500 people and forcing many more into exile.
The region was granted a degree of autonomy once more in 1977, when democracy returned to the country.
The economic crisis in Spain has only served to magnify calls for Catalan independence – as the wealthy Barcelona region is seen as propping up the poorer rest of Spain.

Well done for the out of date copy and paste.

Yes they still have been part of Spain since the 11th century, with a war in between, then another conclusion in 1700's - GET OVER IT. This is in no ones living memory :D

We also live in a socialist country - surely the point in most civilised countries is that some areas make more money than others and wealth is redistributed?

So as Catalonia - (mainly Barcelona & Tarragona financially - who incidentally overall are pro-unity), want to keep all the money themselves. The fact that much of their wealth is gained from trade and tourism with much of Spain seems rather at odds with the priniciples as quoted? So socialist to the point of taking money off the government in loans and assistance in tourism, not so good at handing it back....
The region was granted a degree of autonomy once more in 1977, when democracy returned to the country.
Catalonia was given even more autonomous powers in 2010, with some quite major reforms.

Additionally in 2016 - Catalonia national debt loaned by Madrid stood at €72 billion and around 35% of their GDP - they have near a zero percent loan.

So - aside from in no one's lifetime has there ever been an independent state, apart from a complaint about Franco which ended in 19977 and there have been major reforms since, as recent as 2010 - they have more autonomy than anyone else, more money and interest-free loans for billions.

This is greed and 'Nationlist sentiment' by those in power - there is no logical real argument to this. If Spain recalled it's loans, closed the borders, security, passport control, air space and EU backing - see how quickly their perceived extra money and the business benefits they already receive will vanish. More to it than meets the eye, as with all of these things.

Overall the majority of people voted prop unity (very much so in Barcelona - internationally minded. Outside of Catalonia, within the majority of Spain, this is a not a popular idea to split.

Clearly it's a plan globally which works - Brexit's going swimmingly (UK officially downgraded yet again financially), Trump unites America  - when will we learn.

Great post. Can't help thinking that this has all happened before billions of years ago. Who knows? perhaps Mars was once populated by our species which multiplies exponentially like a virus and eventually kills it's host - in our case planet Earth. Maybe civilisations don't last long. With the exception of humans every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment.

I agree with you that we are fucked and as a species are standing on the foothills of Armageddon. When Kennedy was shot the population of the world was just over 2 billion - it's now approaching 8 billion. Climate change will cause global chaos Africa is suffering and there are huge immigration problems.

I could go on - just thought that I would bring a bit of Christmas cheer Private Fraser style.
